A Year in Review.

In exceptional times, senior business representatives from across the industry review key regulatory, economic and political drivers influencing trading decisions and business development priorities.

Following on from the previous panel, this session will focus on how the regulatory landscape we are facing today is reshaping how we think about post trade. Amongst other things, this session will consider the rolling impacts of SFTR, CSDR, SRD and CMU on existing practices, processes, as well as best practice. It will also consider UMR in the context of connecting the tri-party model with traditional bilateral processes.

This year’s practitioners panel will be drawn primarily from our technical working groups. In addition to familiar topics such as corporate actions management as well as reconciliation and billing processes, senior operations representatives will look at how emerging themes such as ESG, SRD as well as Brexit are driving a new set of challenges across all aspects of post trade.

The final session of the opening day will consider the emergence of new markets as well as how regulatory change is creating fresh opportunities within existing markets. As investors and industry stakeholders seek to exploit these ideas, this session will centre around asset mobilisation, connectivity, and infrastructure, amongst other things. This will include the Middle East and Africa, China Stock Connect as well as the SEC 15c3 changes.

This session will look back at how the post trade world has changed and evolved over the decades.

Taking many of the themes developed during day one, this first panel discussion of day two will look at the key challenges and opportunities facing our industry, but viewed through the lens of our fellow industry associations. Set against a backdrop of different regulatory, product and business priorities, this session will reconcile regional and product divergence with the need for greater standardisation and the implications for post trade efficiencies across our regions.

Introduction of a joint ESG white paper produced by ISLA and Allen & Overy

ESG is likely to be the single biggest ‘agent for change’ in the way we think about how securities lending programmes work. In a post COVID-19 world, it is already clear that investors are demanding different things from their investment portfolios with a greater emphasis being placed on the wider green agenda. Our markets have to both recognise this change and respond to these changes. This session will debate the key issues that will allow an investor to fully comply with their ESG objectives whilst maintaining an effective lending programme. In particular, the operational questions that need to be addressed around areas such as voting, corporate actions and the management of collateral.

A session outlining the work of the ISLA Legal Steering Group as well Opinions and Documentation sub groups, including ongoing and upcoming priorities for 2021 and implications on legal in terms of the regulatory landscape.

Through the development of the Common Domain Model in 2020, together with the more recent initiative to create a Legal Clause Library, ISLA is developing a series of digital building blocks that will drive future efficiencies across the post trade arena. The session will also explore how these building blocks will lead to the wider use of DLT, smart contracts and tokenisation, technologies that have the potential to transform the market, particularly in the realms of connectivity and collateral optimisation.

Drawing upon the overall conference, this final session will pull the themes and threads of the two days together.
